La señorita Stone subió la imagen a su perfil de Facebook y enseguida la foto dio la vuelta a la red. El aluvión de comentarios despectivos contra la protagonista no se hizo esperar e, incluso, se crearon grupos en Facebook pidiendo que fuera fulminada de su trabajo, la ONG Living Independently Forever, Inc. (LIFE). Abochornada por el revuelo formado a su alrededor, Lindsey aseguró que “la foto representaba un desafío a las autoridades” y que no pretendía faltarle el respeto a los militares enterrados en Arlington. Pero sus explicaciones no fueron demasiado convincentes.
LIFE emitió un comunicado diciendo que habían decidido suspender de empleo y sueldo a su empleada y que estudiaría emprender acciones más severas contra ella. Tras conocer el comunicado, la señorita Stone pidió disculpas de forma pública, pero fue demasiado tarde. Días después, la ONG anunciaba el despido de Lindsey y de su compañera autora de la foto, alegando que “de ninguna manera, lo que se plasma en la imagen simboliza la filosofía de la empresa”.
